Turncoat
Directed by: Ray Renati With: Melissa Ortiz & Aeron Macintyre
[AMY wanders onstage, wearing a red coat, rattling keys in her hand, looking for the right one.]
AMY
Car... garage... office... Ah ha!
[She opens a door, JACOB falls out, lies in a pile, unconscious.]
AMY Oh, now that's just not going to do.
[She pokes at JACOB]
AMY Hello? Hello, can you get up? I need to get past to-- The
extra flashlights are in there--
[A groan from JACOB]
AMY
Fine, I'll just--
[She steps over him. She is gone for a moment, and then appears with a flashlight]
AMY
Uh, sir?
JACOB [Faintly]
What?
AMY Um, could you please stop lying on my back porch?
JACOB
huh?
AMY You're on my back porch, and it's a little upsetting. Could you leave?
JACOB
I think I'm bleeding--
AMY Ok, well, I still need you to leave.
JACOB
Can you help me?
AMY Sure, let a strange man into my house - what's the worst that could happen?
[AMY walks inside, JACOB looks up at her.]
AMY
Come on!
JACOB
I'm - I don't think I can walk.
AMY Well, I'll just leave the door open, then.
[JACOB crawls to the door, and props himself up inside.]
AMY
Why were you in my shed?
JACOB I don't know, I... I was just walking through the park, and then, something hit me, and the next thing I knew--
[He falls over]
AMY
I see. What's your name?
[Pause]
What's your--oh jeez.
[She pokes at him.]
JACOB
Call the... a ambulance...
AMY
Why?
JACOB
My head...
AMY
You've got bad timing, man--
[The lights go out.]
AMY The power's been going out on this block all week. Rolling blackouts.
[She turns the flashlight on]
AMY
I'm really sorry. JACOB
I... Can you help?
AMY
How?
JACOB
Get me... some, bandages? Or something?
AMY I don't think I have any of that stuff. Do you know who brought you here? Who hit you?
JACOB
No, I never saw them.
AMY
Huh.
JACOB
Must've been a big guy, though, he really got me.
AMY
[Pointing the flashlight at her own face] You don't remember anything, then?
JACOB
No...
AMY Hmm. Well, I guess you can go, then.
JACOB
What?
AMY If you want to get help, get outside, and maybe one of the neighbours can help you. Maybe a cop car is rolling down the street, or a jogger is going by with her iphone handily strapped to her arm. I'd take your chances out there.
JACOB
I-- I'm in trouble, lady.
AMY
Yeah, and I can't do much for you.
[She walks to a front door, opens it]
Go on, out ya go.
[Jacob crawls towards the door, slowly. He stops, 3/4 of the way there.]
JACOB
I did see - A red coat
AMY
Oh, Jacob...
JACOB
How do you know my name?
AMY You were so close... But The Firm says "hello."
[She turns off the flashlight.]
JACOB
No!
